The most historic area in Lisbon is a vast monument to Portugal’s world-renowned explorers and the Age of Discovery, and marks the spot from which many of the country’s intrepid explorers disembarked on their monumental journeys, including Prince Henry the Navigator, Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama. Christopher Columbus even stopped here after discovering the New World. Today’s explorers of Belem will find illustrious monuments such as Belem Tower and the Monastery of Los Jeronimos, as well as both the Ajuda and Belem palaces.
