Built in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. by the Romans, this amphitheater was built to host gladiatorial combat and could once hold more than 15,000 spectators. It is one of only two Gallo-Roman remains still visible in Paris today. Forgotten for more than 600 years, excavations took place in the late 19th century to reveal this archaeological treasure. Today it serves as a public park where Parisians enjoy picnics, play soccer and marvel at the ancient history surrounding them.
