What Is the Best Island Tour in Phuket?

Phuket itself boasts numerous beautiful beaches, but the surrounding islands are also major attractions. Among them, the Phi Phi Island tour from Phuket is the most popular, featuring stunning bays and lagoons. Alternatively, you can visit the famous James Bond Island to experience sea kayaking through its caves. Or, Ko Racha Yai offers a more tranquil atmosphere.

Best Time to Travel to Phuket

The best time to visit Phuket is during the dry season from November to February each year. This period offers the most comfortable temperatures, averaging between 26-28°C (79-82°F). The sea is calm, providing ideal conditions for island hopping and beach activities. However, this is also typically the peak tourist season. For those seeking fewer crowds, consider visiting in May or late October.

Where to Stay in Phuket

Phuket offers diverse regions, each providing a distinct travel experience:

Patong: This is Phuket's most vibrant area, boasting a rich nightlife and numerous restaurants. It's ideal for first-time visitors to Phuket.

Karon & Kata: Located in southern Phuket, these areas also feature beaches and calm waters. The overall environment is quieter, making it suitable for families.

Phuket Town: Perfect for culture seekers, this area features charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, local markets, and a burgeoning cafe and art scene. It's centrally located for exploring the entire island.

Popular Attractions in Phuket

Patong Beach: This is Phuket's liveliest beach, lined with numerous restaurants and bars. It's also the island's nightlife hub, especially Bangla Road.

Phuket Old Town: The town features many cafes and street art murals, with a night market operating on weekends.

Wat Chalong: Phuket's most important Buddhist temple, housing various Buddhist paintings, golden statues, and gardens.

The Big Buddha: A 45-meter-tall white Buddha statue atop a mountain, offering panoramic views of Phuket.

Promthep Cape: This is the best spot on the island to watch the sunset.

Elephant Sanctuary: Elephant tours are also popular in Phuket, where you can feed, bathe, and learn about elephant conservation.

Day Trips from Phuket

Phi Phi Islands: The most popular day trip destination, where you can admire the emerald sea and towering cliffs at Maya Bay. Head to Monkey Beach, which is also perfect for snorkeling.

Similan Islands: This island is a world-class diving destination featuring underwater coral reserves, but it is only open from October to May.

Racha Island: The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island are ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.

James Bond Island: Located in Phang Nga Bay, this island features iconic limestone pillars with distinctive shapes. You can take a boat tour to explore the surrounding bays and caves.

Getting Around Phuket

Tuk-Tuk: Ideal for short trips; negotiate the fare before departure.

Motorcycle: Renting a motorcycle is the most common mode of transport, but safety precautions are essential.

Taxi: Best booked via Grab, suitable for airport transfers.

Speedboat: The primary way to reach day-trip destinations like Phi Phi Island, Coral Island, and James Bond Island.

Bicycle: Rent a bike in Phuket Town to explore at a leisurely pace.

Tips for Your Phuket Trip

Respect temple etiquette: Dress conservatively when visiting religious sites. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees.

Ensure safety: Check beach flag warnings. Never swim when red flags are flying, especially during monsoon season.

Stay Hydrated: Tropical climates demand constant rehydration. Drink plenty of bottled water throughout the day.

Tipping: While not mandatory in Thailand, tips are greatly appreciated for quality service at hotels, restaurants, and from tour guides.

Haggling: Outside of restaurants and large stores, prices for items like souvenirs or tuk-tuk rides are often negotiable.

La mejor época para visitar Phuket

Verano 2026
June through August marks the mid-season of the southwest monsoon, bringing more frequent but typically short-lived tropical downpours, often occurring in the late afternoon or evening. Temperatures remain warm, ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). If you're seeking fewer crowds and more affordable prices, now is the perfect time, and the atmosphere is much calmer. The increased rainfall transforms the landscape into a lush one, making it the best time to visit waterfalls like Bang Pae and Kathu. For water activities, this is paradoxically the best time for surfing on the western beaches like Kata and Kalim, but sea conditions are often too rough for small boat tours, and swimming flags must be strictly obeyed.

Otoño 2026
September and early October are typically Phuket's wettest months, with the highest likelihood of prolonged heavy rains and rough seas. Temperatures remain tropical, with highs averaging around 30°C to 31°C (86°F to 88°F). Due to the unpredictable weather at this time, the beach and major attractions were nearly deserted. Highlights shift to indoor and cultural activities: indulging in a traditional Thai massage or spa day, taking a Thai cooking class, or visiting ethical Elephant Sanctuaries where the animals thrive in the lush environment. November marks the return to drier conditions and the enchanting Loy Krathong, offering a beautiful cultural experience as the island transitions back into its high season.

Invierno 2026/2027
This period marks Phuket's peak tourist season, characterized by ideal weather conditions: low humidity, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures ranging from 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 89°F). The sea is at its calmest and clearest, making it the prime time for all water activities. Highlights include unparalleled diving and snorkeling, especially on trips to the world-famous Similan Islands, and day trips to Phi Phi Islands. Visitors can immerse themselves in vibrant beach life, breathtaking sunsets, and the festive atmosphere of Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Lunar New Year celebrations. With guaranteed perfect weather, expect peak prices for accommodation, flights, and tours, alongside the largest crowds at popular destinations like Patong Beach and Phuket Old Town.

Primavera 2027
This is Phuket's hottest season, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 36°C (80°F to 97°F) and high humidity. Brief but intense thunderstorms become more frequent in late April and May, offering temporary relief. The main highlight is the famous Songkran Festival in mid-April, when streets transform into massive, entertaining water fights, perfect for cooling off. Please note that during the Songkran Festival, tourist numbers may increase significantly, and costs may rise accordingly. Early mornings offer ideal conditions for outdoor excursions, while afternoons are best spent seeking out air conditioned spas, visiting the Phuket Aquarium, or exploring the unique Sino Portuguese architecture of Old Town Phuket.

10-Day Highlights of Thailand Tour from Bangkok: Phuket, Chiang Mai and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market | Private Tour | Meals Mentioned Included

Highly Recommend!

We learned a lot about Buddhism and the history of the Thailand kingdom. There was a good balance of activities and downtime to independently explore the towns we were staying in. We learned a lot about Thai culture from our guides (food, rituals, habits). The bulk of the hotels had superb rooms, fitness facilities, and swimming pools, and nearly every one of them was really good. The fantastic Thai food was our favorite aspect of the trip. Highly recommend!
