Senior cruise consultant Allen Zhao shares insider tips on selecting the right cruise line for families, parents, river journeys, and polar expeditions

For travelers who've taken countless bus tours—visited Yellowstone, Niagara Falls, Yosemite—there's often one destination left on their bucket list: a cruise.

But with so many cruise lines and routes available, how do first-time cruisers make the right choice?

In the inaugural episode of Tours4fun's Cruise Series, CEO Allen Wang sat down with Allen Zhao, Tours4fun's senior cruise consultant with over a decade of industry experience, to break down the essentials in just three minutes. From traveling with kids and parents to river cruises and polar expeditions, Zhao provided practical guidance for every type of traveler.

Why Cruise vs. Bus Tours? The Ultimate Travel Upgrade

"Our tour guests may have been to Yellowstone, Niagara Falls—they've taken many bus tours," Zhao explained. "But eventually, their ultimate goal is always to take a cruise. The reason is simple."

Traditional bus tours, whether to Yellowstone or Yosemite, involve long hours on the road—often 10+ hours of driving each day—arriving late at hotels, and accumulating significant time and energy costs.

"Cruises completely solve this problem," Zhao said. "You just check in, settle your belongings, check out the ship's activities, have meals, chat—and you arrive at your next destination. Yes, you've reached a new country. Then you disembark with our Chinese-speaking tour leader for sightseeing, return to the ship in the afternoon, and catch a comedy show or acrobatics performance. While you sleep, the ship gently sails to the next country."

"You visit many countries without the exhaustion of traditional tours."

Choosing for Families with Kids: Royal Caribbean Tops the List

When it comes to selecting a cruise line for families, Zhao has a clear recommendation.

"In my 10+ years in the cruise industry, if I'm traveling with family and kids, my first choice is always Royal Caribbean. Their main selling point is size. Over 50% of the entertainment facilities are kid-friendly—it's a family-friendly experience. Various water slides, different performances—it's essentially a giant mobile amusement park.

For Parents: Princess Cruises for Peace, Norwegian for Flexibility

Traveling with older parents requires a different approach.

"If I'm taking my parents, I'd choose a relatively quieter cruise line, like Princess Cruises. Very peaceful. The destinations are also less hectic—Alaska, for example, or South America. Places where you can experience the visual and auditory aspects of natural environments."

Norwegian Cruise Line offers another compelling option, particularly for dining flexibility.

"Among all cruise lines, I think Norwegian offers the most flexible and freest dining experience. You can eat anytime, 24-hour food service—come in whenever you want."

River Cruises and Polar Expeditions: Danube, Rhine, and the Ends of the Earth

For European river cruises along the Danube and Rhine, Zhao recommends established operators.

"When visiting Eastern Europe, the Danube and Rhine—you definitely want to choose established companies like Viking or AmaDeus. You sit in your flat-floor balcony oceanview cabin on the river cruise ship, watching the scenery along the Danube slowly pass before your eyes."

For polar regions—Greenland, Iceland, and beyond—the options expand further.

"Cruise lines like Princess can take you to Arctic and Antarctic regions for cruising. You can also choose our polar expedition landing ships, which can actually take you to the Antarctic continent and experience stepping foot on the southernmost point of the world."

For ultra-luxury travelers, Silversea offers six-star experiences. "Every cabin has a dedicated 24-hour butler, available anytime to arrange all shipboard matters."
