Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Yamdrok Yumtso for clear views?

Accepted Answer

Visit between May and October for the most reliable weather. Summer offers lush green hills, while September provides crisp air and clear skies ideal for photography. Avoid winter months from November to March, as heavy snow often blocks high mountain passes like Kamba La, making the lake inaccessible.

Question 2

Which airport should I fly into to reach Yamdrok Yumtso?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA), the only commercial airport in the region. From there, hire a registered tour vehicle for the two-hour drive west along the G349 highway. Independent travel is not permitted; you must arrange transport through a licensed agency as part of your Tibet Travel Permit itinerary.

Question 3

Do I need a special permit to visit Yamdrok Yumtso?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a Tibet Travel Permit is mandatory for all foreign travelers. Your tour operator will secure this using your Chinese visa details. Additionally, since the lake lies in a border area, your guide must obtain a separate Border Defense Permit. Carry physical copies of both documents, as military checkpoints frequently verify them on the route.

Question 4

Is it safe to swim in Yamdrok Yumtso during summer?

Accepted Answer

No, swimming is strictly prohibited. Yamdrok is considered a sacred holy lake in Tibetan Buddhism, and locals believe disturbing the water brings bad luck. The water temperature remains near freezing year-round due to high altitude, posing severe hypothermia risks. Visitors should admire the turquoise waters from designated viewing platforms only.
