St. Wolfgang originated in the 10th century when legend has it Bishop of Regensburg Saint Wolfgang threw an ax and decided to build a church where it landed along then-Abersee lake. That church containing Gothic altarpiece by Michael Pacher has since become a pilgrimage site for many throughout the years. St. Wolfgang also is famous for its Weisses Roessl, or White Horse Inn, that is the setting for the well-known musical comedy of the same name.
