Question 1

Which airport is closest to Songpan Ancient City and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH) is the nearest gateway, located just 25 kilometers from Songpan. Direct flights operate from Chengdu, Xi'an, and Chongqing. Upon arrival, take a dedicated airport shuttle bus or hire a taxi for a 30-minute drive to the ancient city. Private transfers are recommended during winter months when road conditions may be slippery due to snow.

Question 2

What is the best time to visit Songpan to avoid heavy rain and cold weather?

Accepted Answer

Visit between June and September for warm days ideal for hiking, though afternoon showers are common in July and August. For clear skies and autumn colors, October is optimal despite colder nights. Avoid January and February if you dislike extreme cold, as temperatures often drop below freezing. The rainy season peaks in late summer, so pack waterproof gear regardless of your travel dates.

Question 3

Do I need a special travel permit to enter Songpan Ancient City or nearby areas?

Accepted Answer

No special permit is required for Chinese citizens or foreign tourists to visit Songpan Ancient City itself. However, if you plan to trek into restricted Tibetan pastoral zones or near military installations outside the main town, local guides must arrange temporary access passes. Always carry your passport or ID card, as random checkpoints occasionally verify identification in this border region of Sichuan Province.

Question 4

What currency should I use in Songpan and are credit cards widely accepted?

Accepted Answer

The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). Cash is essential in Songpan, as most small guesthouses, local eateries, and street vendors do not accept credit cards or mobile payments from foreign banks. Withdraw sufficient cash in Chengdu before traveling, as ATMs in Songpan are limited and may not support international cards. Large hotels and tour agencies usually accept UnionPay, Visa, or Mastercard.
