Question 1

How do I get from Salta to Cafayate and what’s the best time of year to make the trip?

Accepted Answer

Travel from Salta to Cafayate by taking RN68, a scenic 180-km route through the Calchaquí Valleys (approx. 3 hours by car). The best time to go is during the dry season, from March to November, when road conditions are optimal and rainfall is minimal. April to May offers pleasant temperatures and fall foliage, enhancing the landscape’s dramatic red rock formations. Regular bus services also operate daily between the two towns.

Question 2

Is public transportation reliable for visiting the Quebrada de las Conchas from Salta?

Accepted Answer

Public transportation to Quebrada de las Conchas is limited; most visitors opt for guided tours or rented vehicles. Buses to Cafayate pass through parts of the quebrada, but access to key viewpoints like Los Sosa, Amadores, and the Garganta del Diablo requires off-route detours. Tour operators offer round-trip transportation with entry fees included, providing the most reliable and informative option for independent travelers without a car.

Question 3

What local pass or card helps save on entrance fees to Salta’s regional attractions?

Accepted Answer

Salta does not currently offer a city-wide tourist pass for attractions. Admission fees at sites like MAAM (Museum of High Altitude Archaeology) and historical estates in the valleys are paid individually. However, booking multi-attraction tours through certified agencies often includes bundled entry and transport, offering comparable savings. Always verify inclusions and group size before purchase to ensure value.

Question 4

What should I know about altitude sickness when visiting Salta (elevation 1,200m / 3,937ft)?

Accepted Answer

At 1,200m, Salta's altitude rarely causes severe sickness, but it can still affect sensitive individuals, especially when proceeding to higher sites like Purmamarca (3,300m) or the Salinas Grandes. Acclimatize for 24 hours in Salta—avoid alcohol, stay hydrated, and rest upon arrival. Consider sipping mate de coca, a locally used herbal tea believed to ease symptoms. Seek medical help if dizziness or nausea persists.
