The Canadian Pacific Railway built a railway through the pass in 1884, and it was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1971. The Royal Canadian Artillery uses 105 mm howitzers to knock down snow buildup around the pass, thus preventing unexpected avalanches from threatening traffic!
