Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Norbulingka in Lhasa?

Accepted Answer

Visit between June and August when the Shoton Festival transforms the gardens into a vibrant cultural hub. Temperatures are mild, and the grounds are lush. Avoid winter months as the palace closes and heavy snow limits access. Book tickets early during festival season due to high demand from both locals and tourists.

Question 2

How do I get to Norbulingka from Lhasa Gonggar Airport?

Accepted Answer

Take the airport shuttle bus to Lhasa city center, then hire a licensed taxi for the short ride west to Norbulingka. The total trip takes about ninety minutes. Taxis are metered but agree on a fare beforehand. Public buses are cheaper but less reliable for travelers with luggage. Always carry your passport for security checks near the site.

Question 3

Do I need a special ticket to enter Norbulingka during the Shoton Festival?

Accepted Answer

Yes, standard entry tickets do not cover festival events. Purchase a separate Shoton Festival pass at the gate or via official Tibet tourism platforms weeks in advance. These passes include access to opera performances and picnic zones within the gardens. Regular admission resumes after the festival ends in late August each year.

Question 4

Can I use credit cards at Norbulingka or should I bring cash?

Accepted Answer

Bring Chinese Yuan in cash. Most ticket booths and nearby vendors do not accept international credit cards. ATMs are available in central Lhasa but may run out of cash during peak tourist season. Small bills are useful for buying water, souvenirs, or tipping guides inside the park premises.
