Best Lucca Tours & Trips

View this ancient Tuscan town from its intact Renaissance-era city walls that completely encircle it, whose ramparts are replete with a tree-lined footpath that looks down on the historic center and out towards the Apuane Alps. Lucca is just as impressive from its cobbled city streets with its lovely piazzas and shady promenades that are perfect for the passeggiata, an evening stroll that is a favorite pastime of Italians all over Italy. Not to be missed is the Puccini House Museum, where you will find some of native son Giacomo Puccini’s music scores from his operas, photos and a piano.

Italy 2024!

It was a wonderful trip, and everything was done for us by our travel agent, she made the whole experience memorable. There were great hotels, great restaurants, and a great bus — we even had a toilet on our bus! Everything was super clean! It was great in every way. We had a great group of people, very knowledgeable tour guides, and they were very deserving of a nice tip! They are amazing!

FAQs about Lucca Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Lucca to avoid crowds and enjoy good weather?

Visit Lucca between April-June or September-October for mild weather and fewer tourists. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant temperatures, ideal for walking the historic walls and cycling the ramparts, while avoiding the peak summer crowds and heat. The city hosts fewer large events compared to July’s Lucca Summer Festival, allowing a more relaxed experience.

How do I get from Pisa Airport (PSA) to Lucca using public transportation?

Take the Pisa Mover shuttle from the airport terminal to Pisa San Rossore station, then board a regional train to Lucca. The train ride takes 20 minutes and runs frequently. Total journey time is about 45-60 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks or online via Trenitalia, and children under 12 ride free with a paying adult.

Is a local transport pass necessary for getting around Lucca?

No, a transport pass is not necessary. Lucca’s compact historic center is fully walkable, and the entire city wall is a pedestrian promenade. Bicycle rentals are widely available and ideal for circling the ramparts. Public buses serve outer districts and nearby towns, but trips are low-cost and infrequent, making individual tickets sufficient.

What are Lucca’s main festivals and when do they take place?

Lucca hosts several key events: Lucca Comics & Games (November), attracting global pop culture fans; the Lucca Summer Festival (July), featuring international music acts; and LucaFilm Festival (January), focusing on independent cinema. Additionally, the city celebrates the Feast of San Paolino (July 12-13) with religious processions and fireworks honoring its patron saint.
