Question 1

What is the best time of year to cruise the Huangpu River?

Accepted Answer

Visit between October and December for crisp air and clear views, or March to May for mild temperatures. Avoid the rainy season from June to July, as heavy downpours often cancel outdoor deck access. Winter nights offer stunning light shows, but dress warmly since river breezes are biting.

Question 2

Which Huangpu River cruise pier should I use in Shanghai?

Accepted Answer

Most tourists depart from the Shiliupu Pier near Yu Garden or the Qinhuangdao Road Pier in North Bund. Shiliupu offers easier access to historic sites, while Qinhuangdao provides shorter queues. Verify your ticket exactly, as some operators use lesser-known docks like the East Jinling Road Ferry Terminal.

Question 3

Can I use a Shanghai Public Transport Card on Huangpu River ferries?

Accepted Answer

Yes, standard public ferries crossing between Puxi and Pudong accept the Shanghai Public Transport Card for just two RMB. However, sightseeing cruise boats require separate tickets purchased online or at pier counters. Do not attempt to use transit cards for premium dinner cruises, as they strictly enforce pre-booked seating.

Question 4

Is it safe to walk along the Huangpu River bund at night?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Bund and Lujiazui waterfronts are heavily patrolled and safe for walking late at night. Stay on main promenade paths to avoid construction zones. Pickpockets target crowded photo spots near the Chen Yi Square, so keep bags zipped. The area remains busy until midnight, ensuring plenty of witnesses and security presence.
