Constructed in a triangular shape, the castle featured a formidable pattern of bunkers, parapets, and artillery batteries that provided the Spanish forces with a powerful defensive position. After the Spanish American Wars for Independence, the castle was claimed by the Colombian government. Today it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
