Nestled in the northeastern part of Beijing, the Lama Temple, also known as Yonghegong, is a place where tranquility meets grandeur. With a history dating back to 1694, it initially served as the residence of Prince Yinzhen, who later became Emperor Yongzheng. In 1725, it was transformed into an imperial palace, and in 1744, under Emperor Qianlong, it was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist temple.

The Lama Temple is a harmonious blend of Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan architectural styles. As you stroll along its approximately 400 - meter - long central axis, you'll be greeted by a series of magnificent halls. The Hall of Harmony and Peace (Yonghe Palace) once witnessed imperial activities. The Hall of Eternal Blessing (Yongyou Hall) exudes a solemn atmosphere. The Hall of the Dharma Wheel (Falun Hall), with its unique "one large and four small" Tibetan - style skylights on the roof, symbolizes Mount Sumeru surrounded by the four great continents in Buddhist cosmology. The Pavilion of Ten Thousand Fortunes (Wanfu Pavilion) houses an 18 - meter - high white sandalwood Buddha statue, a masterpiece that is both awe - inspiring and a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. This statue, along with the sandalwood - carved Five Hundred Arhat Mountain and the golden nanmu - carved Buddha niche, are known as the three wonders of the Lama Temple's wood carving.

The temple also houses a wealth of precious cultural relics, including numerous Buddha statues, intricate Thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist paintings), and historical artifacts, many of which were precious gifts from Tibetan elites and senior monks to the imperial family since the 16th century.
