Itinerary
Dedicated to the memory of the unfortunate Salem Witch Trial victims, the museum is one of the city's most popular attractions. Here, you will learn about the personalities behind the hysteria that swept through the area as young girls cried out the names of their alleged tormentors Powerless against the allegations of practicing witchcraft, hundreds of accused individuals were imprisoned by the summer in a community driven by fear, superstition and intense rivalries.
A court, established to oversee the trials, convicted Bridget Bishop on June 2, 1692 and carried out her death sentence eight days later. No one was above suspicion when the summer of executions began, including an affluent couple and pious church members. Before reason returned, 20 people were executed and five died in prison.
The Salem Witch Museum places you in the midst of this disturbing late 17th century phenomenon. The museum's exhibits provide a unique perspective on this dramatic event in colonial America. Stage sets, life-size props, special lighting and expert narrations provide a riveting account of the 1692 Witch Trials.
Visitors can also learn about the evolving perception of witches through the ages. This provocative exhibit depicts stereotypical beliefs about witches, the phenomenon of witch-hunts and various aspects of 17th century witchcraft as well as its modern day practices.
