Like many of its mid-sized urban counterparts along the Northeast Coast, the city of Waterbury first gained fame in the 19th century as an industrial powerhouse, more specifically for the production of brassware and the one-dollar pocket watch, the latter eventually growing to become just as important as the brass industry. Major attractions include the Timexpo Museum, which traces the origins of Timex Group to the Waterbury Clock Company; Downtown Waterbury Historic District; and Brass Mill Center, a shopping venue built on the site of the old Scovill Manufacturing Co. factory buildings.
