Best Lima Tours & Trips

Peru’s capital city Lima is often the first stop for international travelers and a fascinating destination in its own right. Home to more than 10 million people, Lima stretches along the Pacific coast and combines colonial history with modern city life. The city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features landmarks like Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral of Lima, and the Monastery of San Francisco with its catacombs. At the same time, districts such as Miraflores and Barranco offer ocean views, trendy cafés, and vibrant nightlife. Lima is also widely regarded as the culinary capital of South America, with world-renowned restaurants serving everything from traditional ceviche to cutting-edge fusion cuisine. Along the Costa Verde, visitors can enjoy paragliding over the cliffs or relaxing at the beaches, while museums like the Larco Museum showcase Peru’s rich pre-Columbian history.

How Many Days in Lima is Enough

We recommend spending 3-4 days in Lima to fully explore the city. This allows enough time for a thorough Lima city tour, visits to major museums, and relaxation in the coastal area. Five days will allow you to take day trips to nearby destinations such as Huacachina.

The Best Time to Travel to Lima

The best time to visit Lima is during the summer, from December to April. During these months, average temperatures range from 65 to 81 °F (18 to 27 °C), with plenty of sunshine and clear skies, perfect for hiking and beach activities. The rest of the year is characterized by persistent coastal fog, locally known as “garúa,” during which the city is often overcast. While there is less sunshine, it is still a great time to explore museums and enjoy the local cuisine, and there are fewer tourists.

Getting Around Lima

In Lima, you can choose to take the Metropolitano, which is a BRT system. It connects Miraflores, San Isidro, and the city center, and is a convenient option often used by tourists.

If you need to take a cab, it is recommended to negotiate the price in advance or use online taxi platforms such as Beat, Cabify, or Uber, which are safer and more reliable.

If you want to travel to cities such as Cusco and Arequipa, you can choose between long-distance buses and domestic flights.

Top Attractions in Lima, Peru

Lima's charm lies in its diverse districts and rich history. Here are some top things to see in Lima.

Lima Main Square: This is the historical center of Lima and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is surrounded by landmarks such as the Municipal Palace of Lima, Lima Cathedral, and the Archbishop's Palace of Lima, making it the perfect starting point for exploring Lima.

Basílica and Convent of San Francisco, Lima: A representative example of colonial Baroque architecture. The most famous attraction is the underground crypt, where visitors can view well-preserved skeletons and underground passages.

Pucllana Site Museum: This is a mud-brick pyramid ruin dating back to the pre-Inca period between 200 and 700 AD. It was once the political and religious center of Lima culture and has now been converted into an archaeological site and museum where visitors can see the preserved pyramid, ritual sites, and excavated artifacts.

Larco Museum: This is one of Peru's most famous museums. The museum has an extraordinary collection of ceramics, textiles, gold, and silverware, showcasing more than 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history. There is also a garden and café inside the museum.

Love Park: Located in the Miraflores area, the park features a large sculpture of a couple kissing in the center. The surrounding benches and walls are decorated with colorful patterns and love poems.

Bridge of Sighs: Built in the 19th century, this bridge has a romantic atmosphere. Legend has it that if you cross the bridge for the first time and hold your breath, your wish will come true. There are also several cafes and galleries nearby.

Day Trips from Lima

For visitors with more time to spare, Lima excursions offer opportunities to explore beyond the city. We have some recommended destinations.

Pachacamac: Located about 30 kilometers southeast of Lima, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. It is an important pre-Inca archaeological site. You can visit temples, pyramids, and museums to learn about ancient Peruvian civilization.

Islas Ballestas: Take a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands to see sea lions, penguins, and seabirds.

Huacachina Oasis: This destination is usually combined with Islas Ballestas for a day trip. It is a natural oasis surrounded by desert, ideal for sandboarding, desert buggy rides, and other activities.

Where to Stay in Lima

When choosing where to stay in Lima, we recommend the upscale coastal areas of Miraflores and Barranco. Miraflores is close to the coastal cliffs and the city center. Barranco is an area with a strong artistic atmosphere and extraordinary street art. Traveling from these two areas is very convenient. Of course, you can also choose San Isidro, which is Lima's business district and a quieter environment.

Best Time to Visit Lima

Winter 2026/2027
December through February in Lima marks the warmest and sunniest stretch of the year. Daytime highs rise into the mid-to-upper 70s °F (~25-27 °C), occasionally touching around 80 °F (~27-29 °C) in more sheltered sectors. Even though rainfall remains nearly nonexistent, the humidity remains elevated, and coastal breezes moderate the warmth. The skies clear more frequently, offering crisp sunset views above the Pacific from Miraflores cliffs, and the beaches along Costa Verde become magnet for surfers and sun-seekers. Waterfront dining in the beachfront district pairs beautifully with cooled Pisco Sours and summer-seafood platters. Cultural evenings in the historic centre thrive under open skies and the urban pulse of Lima reawakens.

Spring 2026
From March through May in Lima the climate is in a soft transition from coastal summer warmth towards the cooler, mist-shrouded winter. Daytime highs gradually decline from the mid-70s °F (~24 °C) in March to around the low-70s (~22 °C) by May. Skies begin to cloud as the cold Humboldt Current and marine layer exert greater influence, producing the famous garúa mist especially in early mornings. During this season the historic centre around Plaza de Armas (Lima) invites pleasant strolls, cafés in Miraflores offer sea-views with gentle breezes, and the coastal promenade - the Malecón de Miraflores - becomes especially appealing. Bird-watching at the nearby Lomas de Lachay reserve bursts into green after the dry months. The humidity begins to build but remains comfortable for exploring the city and its culinary gems without intense heat or heavy fog.

Summer 2026
The months of June through August in Lima bring the coolest and often cloudiest conditions along the Peruvian coast. Average highs sit around 66-69 °F (~19-21 °C) and nighttime lows remain in the range of 60-63 °F (~16-17 °C). Persistent low-level clouds and the garúa mist dominate mornings, with the sun breaking through only occasionally in the early afternoon. Though the temperatures are mild, the sky frequently appears grey and brightness is reduced. That said, visits to the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Lima, the vibrant street-art districts of Barranco and Miraflores, and the nearby surfing spots along the coast take on a crisp, cool atmosphere. The often calmer sea-temperature around 62-64 °F (~17-18 °C) invites surfers in wetsuits at dawn, and the quieter evening skies offer atmospheric glimpses of the Pacific horizon. The layer of haze gives Lima a mystical quality that pairs well with urban explorations of colonial churches and contemporary galleries.

Autumn 2026
From September into November, Lima transitions out of its misty winter phase as the overcast skies begin to lighten and sunlight gradually returns. Daytime temperatures climb from around 63-66 °F (~17-19 °C) in September toward the low-70s (~22 °C) by November. The garúa fades, the marine layer lifts, and more hours of sunshine allow visits to the archaeological site of Huaca Pucllana to happen under softer golden light and strolling the rugged cliffs of the Malecón feels revitalising. Outdoor dining in Miraflores and Barranco thrives as the cloud cover recedes. Early-morning fog gives way to clearer skies, and the sea last warms before the summer wanes. The food scene in Lima steps into focus, with an array of cevicherías, rooftop bars and culinary festivals celebrating the arrival of new-season seafood.

FAQs about Lima Tours

Is Lima safe for tourists?

Lima can be safe for tourists if you stick to well-known areas like Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro, which are well-patrolled and popular with visitors. Normal big-city precautions apply: watch for pickpocketing in crowded spots, don’t display valuables, and use ride-hailing apps instead of unregistered street taxis. Some outer districts are best avoided, especially after dark, and stay updated on local conditions before and during your trip.

What transport options are best for navigating Lima city?

Getting around Lima involves a mix of bus rapid transit (Metropolitano), ride-hailing apps, and taxis. The Metropolitano offers a reliable way to move between central areas like Miraflores and downtown, though it can be crowded. Uber, Cabify, and Beat are recommended for safer, trackable travel around the city. Standard public buses and colectivos are cheaper but can be confusing and less secure for tourists. Always plan routes in advance and avoid unlicensed transport.

What are the best places to visit in Lima for first-time travelers?

Must-visit sights include the Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas) in the historic center, iconic for its colonial architecture; Miraflores for its scenic Malecón and ocean views; Barranco for bohemian streets & the Puente de los Suspiros; and archaeological sites like Huaca Pucllana. These are among the top Lima attractions that give a feel for Peru’s past and present.

When is the best time to visit Lima?

The best time for sunny weather in Lima is December-March when skies are clearer and temperatures are warmer. Otherwise, the city can be overcast or mildly cool much of the year due to coastal fog, even though rain is uncommon. Planning your Lima trip around these months gives you better conditions for walking the city and seaside views.
