First time in the Rockies and I never had to think about what came next. The Icefield and Peyto Lake were the two that stopped me talking.

Cheap for what you get. Beds were fine, showers were hot, and I ticked off every lake I came to see.

Two things stand out. The sunrise at Moraine Lake, which is worth setting the alarm for, and a solid two hours at Lake Louise rather than the twenty-minute dash I got on an earlier trip. Our guide was organised, funny when it suited him, and never lost anybody.

The reason I chose this over the day trips is the two-hour window at Lake Louise, and it delivered. I walked the lakeside trail all the way to the far end, took about forty photographs and still had a quarter of an hour to sit and do nothing. Emerald Lake the next morning was quieter and, honestly, I liked it more. The water really is that colour; nobody has edited it. Our guide knew when each stop would be emptiest, which saved us a lot of jostling for the same view.

Seven days sounds like a lot until you look at the distances on a map, and whoever planned this route clearly did the maths, because no single day turned into a coach marathon. The unhurried stop at Lake Louise is what sold me over the cheaper four-day versions. It is just enough time to walk the full shoreline and still sit down with a coffee. Moraine Lake on day five is the one that stays with me. Pickup at Calgary was a person holding a sign with my name on it, not a phone number I had to chase, which set the tone.
