Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit the Yulin Grottoes to avoid sandstorms?

Accepted Answer

Plan your trip between May and October to enjoy stable weather and clear skies. The region experiences frequent sandstorms during spring, particularly from March to April, which can obscure views and disrupt transport. Summer offers lush scenery but brings higher temperatures, so early morning visits are recommended for comfort and optimal photography conditions inside the caves.

Question 2

Which airport should I fly into to reach the Yulin Grottoes in Guazhou County?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, located approximately 130 kilometers west of the site. There is no direct airport in Guazhou County. From Dunhuang, you can hire a private car or join a organized tour for the two-hour drive east along the G3011 highway. Public buses are infrequent and do not drop passengers directly at the grotto entrance, making private transport the most reliable option.

Question 3

Do I need a special ticket or pass to enter the Yulin Grottoes compared to Mogao Caves?

Accepted Answer

Yes, access requires a specific admission ticket purchased exclusively for the Yulin Grottoes; the Mogao Caves pass does not grant entry here. Tickets must often be reserved in advance due to daily visitor caps designed to protect the murals. Upon arrival, visitors join a guided group tour as independent wandering inside the caves is prohibited to prevent humidity and carbon dioxide damage to the ancient artwork.

Question 4

How far is the Yulin Grottoes site from the nearest major town and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

The grottoes are situated about 45 kilometers southeast of Guazhou county seat and 170 kilometers from Dunhuang city. The site sits in a remote river valley, so self-driving or booking a dedicated driver is essential. Navigation apps may show unpaved roads near the entrance; stick to the main paved access road to avoid getting stuck in the sandy terrain, especially after rare summer rain showers.
