The Zhangye Danxia landforms are a place where you can feel the passage of geological time. Standing there, looking at the layers of rock, you realize how ancient the earth really is. The Mogao Caves are a place where you can feel the passage of human time – the centuries of devotion and artistry that went into creating this site is almost beyond comprehension. 5-Day Group Tours: Ningxia Yinchuan, Shapotou, Zhongwei and Five Lakes Crossing in Tengger Desert·

Highly recommend this tour! We are foreigners unfamiliar with this area and the agency team communicated in a timely and professional manner 1 month before the trip to make sure we have everything we need. When we arrived in Ningxia, we were picked up by Driver Zhang who accompanied us for the whole trip and took great care of us. She is so bright, kind and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We were able to experience the beauty of Ningxia and have completely original experiences like desert camel riding and off roading, all at our own leisurely pace. They also prepared desert supplies and a small gift which was so thoughtful. We can’t recommend the tour enough - it is one of the best travel experiences of our life!

FAQs about Yinchuan Tours

Which airport serves Yinchuan and how far is it from the city center?

Yinchuan Hedong International Airport (INC) is the primary gateway, located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of the city center. Travelers can reach downtown via airport shuttle bus, taxi, or ride-hailing apps in about 30 to 40 minutes. The airport offers direct flights to major Chinese hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an, facilitating easy connections for international visitors arriving through these cities.

What is the best time to visit Yinchuan to avoid extreme weather conditions?

The optimal travel window is from May to October when temperatures are mild and suitable for outdoor exploration. Summers can be hot but dry, while winters are bitterly cold with frequent freezing winds. Avoid January and February unless you specifically seek winter landscapes, as many rural attractions close. September is ideal for viewing golden poplar forests along the Yellow River without the peak summer heat.

Do I need a special pass to visit the West Xia Imperial Tombs or Helan Mountain?

No special regional pass is required for individual sites like the West Xia Imperial Tombs or Helan Mountain Rock Art. Visitors purchase separate entry tickets at each location or book combined tours through local agencies. However, the Ningbo Tourism Card may offer discounts if you plan extensive multi-day trips across Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Always carry your passport for ticket verification at historical sites.

What currency should I use in Yinchuan and are credit cards widely accepted?

The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). While major hotels and upscale restaurants in Jinfeng District accept Visa or Mastercard, cash remains essential for small vendors, rural markets, and public transport. Withdraw money from ATMs at the airport or bank branches in Xingqing District before heading to remote areas. Mobile payment apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay are ubiquitous but require a linked Chinese bank account.
