Best Time to Visit Ulan

Autumn2026/2027
Autumn brings a breathtaking golden transformation to Ulan, with temperatures cooling from 5°C (41°F) to 18°C (64°F). As the monsoon moisture fades, the sky becomes a consistent, piercing sapphire blue, offering the best conditions for stargazing over the salt flats. The vast poplar forests and grasslands turn brilliant shades of amber and ochre, providing a stunning contrast to the white salt crystals of Chaka. This stable, dry weather is perfect for a road trip along the scenic G109 highway or exploring the mystical "Alien Ruins" near Mount Baigong. Photographers favor this season for its soft, golden hour light and the sharp clarity of the distant mountains. It is also the harvest season for local wolfberries, and visitors can enjoy the sight of red berries drying in the sun across the rustic rural landscapes.

Winter2026/2027
Winter in Ulan is a serene, frozen kingdom where temperatures typically range from -18°C (-1°F) to 2°C (36°F). While the high-altitude cold is biting, the landscape becomes a minimalist masterpiece of white salt, blue ice, and brown earth. The Chaka Salt Lake often partially freezes, creating unique geometric ice formations that sparkle like diamonds under the intense winter sun. This is the quietest time of year, offering a rare, meditative experience for those who brave the chill to see the "Mirror of the Sky" in its most desolate and pure form. Travelers can find warmth in local Mongolian yurts, sipping hot milk tea and savoring roasted mutton while learning about traditional plateau life. The lack of atmospheric moisture makes the winter nights exceptionally clear, turning the county into one of the best spots for deep-space astrophotography.

8-Day Northwest China Silk Road Tour from Xining: Zhangye, Qinghai Lake, Danxia, Jiayuguan City Tower, Mingsha Mountain Moon Tooth Spring, Mati Temple Grottoes

I'll never forget the sunset over Qinghai Lake – the water turned a deep shade of violet and gold, and the mountains on the horizon were silhouetted against the sky. The Zhangye Danxia landforms were equally beautiful under the morning light. The Mogao Caves were a cultural treasure, and our guide's detailed explanations made them come alive. The 8-day tour was a rich and rewarding experience.
