Best Twelve Apostles Tours & Trips

The Twelve Apostles were formed 10-20 million years ago from constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the Australian mainland, and now stand as rocky sentinels just offshore. They are part of the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park, where visitors from all over the world can find some of Victoria’s most dramatic underwater scenery, including canyons, fissures, kelp forests and reefs.

FAQs about Twelve Apostles Tours

What is the best time of year to visit the Twelve Apostles to avoid crowds and see clear views?

Visit during shoulder seasons like March to May or September to November for fewer crowds and stable weather. Summer brings heavy tourist traffic, while winter often features stormy skies and rough seas that can obscure views. Early mornings offer the best light for photography and quieter walking paths along the Great Ocean Road.

Which airport is closest to the Twelve Apostles and how do I get there without a car?

Avalon Airport near Geelong is the closest major hub, about a two-hour drive away. Without a car, book a guided day tour from Melbourne or take a V/Line train to Geelong followed by a connecting bus service. Public transport options are limited directly to the site, so pre-booking a shuttle or joining an organized group ensures reliable access.

Are there entry fees or local passes required to access the Twelve Apostles Lookout?

Access to the Twelve Apostles Lookout is free, as it sits within Port Campbell National Park. However, parking fees apply at the main visitor center during peak hours. No specific local pass is needed just for this site, but purchasing a Parks Victoria pass makes sense if you plan to explore other nearby attractions like Loch Ard Gorge or Gibson Steps on the same trip.

How dangerous are the coastal cliffs at the Twelve Apostles and what safety rules must visitors follow?

The limestone cliffs are unstable and prone to sudden collapse, making them extremely dangerous. Stay strictly behind marked barriers and fencing at all times. Venturing off designated paths risks severe injury or death due to unpredictable rockfalls. Heed all warning signs, keep children close, and never climb over railings for photos, regardless of how tempting the view may appear.
