Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Tuxtla Gutiérrez?

Accepted Answer

The best time to visit Tuxtla Gutiérrez is during the dry season from November to April. Temperatures range from 68°F to 86°F, ideal for exploring Sumidero Canyon and the city. Avoid the rainy season (May to October), when afternoon downpours can disrupt outdoor activities and increase mosquito presence.

Question 2

How do I get from Tuxtla Gutiérrez International Airport (TGZ) to downtown efficiently?

Accepted Answer

Take an official airport taxi from TGZ to downtown – it costs around 250–350 MXN and takes 20 minutes. Prepay at the taxi desk inside arrivals. Alternatively, use ride-hailing apps like DiDi for lower rates. Public buses (Unitrans) are cheaper (20 MXN) but require walking to the highway pickup point.

Question 3

Is Tuxtla Gutiérrez safe for solo travelers and tourists exploring on foot?

Accepted Answer

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is generally safe for tourists in well-populated areas like Parque de la Marimba and Avenida Central. Avoid isolated streets at night and keep valuables hidden. Use trusted transport after dark. Pickpocketing can occur in markets, so remain alert. Check local advisories and stick to tourist-designated zones.

Question 4

What local transportation pass or options work best for visiting Sumidero Canyon and nearby attractions?

Accepted Answer

There is no city transit pass, but colectivos (shared vans) to Sumidero Canyon depart near Mercado el Zapotal – fare is 40 MXN one way. For flexibility, rent a car or book a guided tour from Tuxtla’s main plaza. Boat tours from Chiapa de Corzo cost 300 MXN and must be combined with transport.
