The Thomas Jefferson Memorial was designed by John Russell Pope to resemble the Roman Pantheon and built between 1939-43 with a 19-foot statue of Jefferson by Rudulph Evans added in 1947. Inscriptions on the memorial's inside walls include lines from the 1776 Declaration of Independence, 1777 A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom and an 1800 letter about not having a state religion. The landmark is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
