Question 1

How do I get to Shifen Old Street from Taipei Main Station?

Accepted Answer

Take the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) Pingxi Line directly from Taipei Main Station to Shifen Station. The trip takes about one hour. Trains run hourly, but check the schedule as frequency varies. The old street is immediately outside the station exit. No transfers are needed if you board the correct direct train.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Shifen to avoid heavy rain and crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit between October and April for the driest weather. Avoid summer months like June and July, which coincide with the rainy season and typhoon risks. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends. Arrive early in the morning before 10 AM to experience the lantern releases without large tour groups blocking the narrow railway tracks.

Question 3

Can I still walk on the tracks when trains pass through Shifen Old Street?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but safety is paramount. Vendors and visitors must clear the active railway tracks immediately when a train approaches. Announcements play locally, and staff often signal arrivals. Step onto the raised platforms or behind shop displays until the train passes. The train moves slowly, and the street reopens instantly after it clears the section.

Question 4

Do I need a specific travel pass to ride the train to Shifen?

Accepted Answer

You do not need a special pass. You can use an EasyCard for seamless tap-and-go entry on the TRA Pingxi Line. Alternatively, purchase a round-trip ticket at Taipei Main Station. The Pingxi Line is covered by the Taiwan Tourism Shuttle if you have a multi-day pass, but standard tickets or EasyCard are the most flexible options for this specific route.
