Question 1

Which airport is closest to Shaxi Ancient Town and how do I get there from the terminal?

Accepted Answer

Lijang Sanyi Airport is the nearest major hub, located about 90 kilometers away. Upon arrival, take a pre-booked private transfer or join a shared shuttle to Shaxi, which takes roughly 1.5 hours. Direct public buses are infrequent and often require a confusing transfer in Jianchuan county. Taxis at the airport may overcharge, so agree on a fixed price before departing or use a ride-hailing app if available.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Shaxi to avoid heavy rain and large tourist crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit between March and May or late October to November for mild weather and fewer visitors. The rainy season runs from June to September, bringing daily downpours that can make the old cobblestone streets slippery and muddy. Winter months are dry but can get quite cold at night due to the high altitude. Avoid Chinese national holidays like Spring Festival and Golden Week in October when domestic tourism peaks significantly.

Question 3

Do I need to buy an entrance ticket to enter Shaxi Ancient Town or visit Sideng Square?

Accepted Answer

No, there is no general entrance fee to walk through Shaxi Ancient Town or explore the historic Sideng Square. You can freely access the market, temples, and old streets without a pass. However, small fees apply if you enter specific museums like the Old Theatre or participate in guided cultural workshops. Keep some cash on hand for these minor charges, as some smaller venues do not accept mobile payments from foreign cards.

Question 4

What is the most efficient way to travel from Dali Old Town to Shaxi without a private car?

Accepted Answer

Take a long-distance bus from Dali North Bus Station to Jianchuan County, which departs several times daily and takes about two hours. From the Jianchuan bus terminal, transfer to a local minivan or taxi for the remaining 20-minute ride to Shaxi. This route is cheaper than a direct private charter but requires managing two separate tickets. Ensure you check the return schedule from Jianchuan to Dali in advance to avoid being stranded.
