Spring
Spring in Shigatse is a season of crisp awakening, with temperatures gradually rising from 0°C (32°F) to 15°C (59°F). While the nights remain chilly, the increasing sunshine begins to thaw the high-altitude landscapes, making it an ideal window for clear views of the Himalayas. Travelers flock to the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, to witness the vibrant Thangka Unveiling Festival. Stable weather is particularly favorable for the legendary journey to Everest Base Camp, as the skies are often remarkably clear before summer clouds arrive. For a cultural detour, the ancient Pelkor Chode Monastery in nearby Gyantse offers a peaceful atmosphere to admire the "One Hundred Thousand Buddhas" of the Kumbum Stupa against a backdrop of budding willow trees.

Summer 2026
Summer transforms Shigatse into a lush highland retreat, with daytime temperatures hovering between 10°C (50°F) and 23°C (73°F). This is the "wet" season, though most rain falls in short nighttime bursts, leaving the air fresh and the oxygen levels at their annual peak. The surrounding valleys and grasslands turn a vivid emerald green, providing a stunning setting for the Linka Festival, where locals enjoy traditional picnics and horse racing. It is the perfect time to explore the Sakya Monastery, known as the "Second Dunhuang" for its massive library of ancient scrolls. While Mount Everest may occasionally be hidden behind monsoon mists, lower-altitude sites like the Shalu Monastery and the fertile barley fields of the Nyang Chu River valley are at their most picturesque and inviting.

Autumn 2026
Autumn is widely regarded as the golden season for travel in Shigatse, with dry, predictable weather and temperatures ranging from 5°C (41°F) to 20°C (68°F). As the monsoon recedes, the "Sea of Clouds" gives way to clear, deep-blue skies, offering the best chance to see the sunset turn the summit of Mount Everest into a glowing golden pyramid. The harvest season paints the plains in shades of amber, creating a beautiful contrast with the whitewashed walls of traditional Tibetan villages. Photography enthusiasts should head to the Karola Glacier or the high passes of G318 to capture the sharp, majestic silhouettes of the Himalayan peaks. Hiking and trekking conditions are at their absolute best, whether you are walking the sacred kora around Tashilhunpo or exploring the rugged terrain of the Gama Valley.

Winter
Winter in Shigatse is a quiet, sun-drenched sanctuary, with temperatures ranging from -12°C (10°F) to 8°C (46°F). Despite the biting cold at night, the daytime is often surprisingly pleasant due to the intense high-altitude radiation and lack of wind. This is the "authentic" season, as thousands of pilgrims from across the plateau gather for the Tibetan New Year (Losar) and the Butter Lamp Festival. The crowds of tourists vanish, allowing for a deeply spiritual experience at the Rongbuk Monastery, the highest in the world. Visitors can enjoy significantly lower prices and unobstructed, snow-dusted views of the world's tallest peaks. After a day of exploring the frost-covered ancient fortresses like the Samdruptse Dzong, relaxing with a steaming cup of yak butter tea provides a cozy glimpse into the local lifestyle.

13-Day Tibet Spiritual Tour from Lhasa to Kathmandu: Shigatse, Saga, Tarchen and Gyirong | Everest Base Camp, Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash Kora

I loved the mix of hotels and local guesthouses. The farm lunch by Yamdrok Lake was such a unique experience—I still remember the hospitality of the local family.

Interesting

Went there during the peak season for one week, visited Lhasa and Namtso lake. First 24h had problems to adapt, after that was OK. Tibet is fascinating and rich in culture, really worth visiting. Organisation was OK, the guide she was very nice, knowledgable and helpful.
