Question 1

How do I get to Rhine Falls from Zurich Airport (ZRH) using public transit?

Accepted Answer

Take the S16 or S7 train from Zurich Airport to Winterthur, then transfer to a S9 train to Neuhausen am Rheinfall station. The entire journey takes about 45 minutes. From the station, follow signs to the falls – it's a 10-minute walk. Trains run hourly, and Swiss Travel Passes are valid.

Question 2

What is the best viewing platform for Rhine Falls and are they accessible for people with mobility issues?

Accepted Answer

The best panoramic view is from the upstream river platform, reachable via a short ferry and walk. For accessibility, the main path from Neuhausen station is paved and connects to viewing areas on the south bank, including a wheelchair-accessible platform. The rock path and island platforms are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Question 3

Is it safe and legal to swim near Rhine Falls?

Accepted Answer

Swimming near Rhine Falls is extremely dangerous and prohibited due to powerful currents and suction forces. Signs are posted at key points. However, you can legally and safely swim further downstream at designated areas like the Rhine swimming zone in Schaffhausen, about 3 km away, which offers lifeguard supervision in summer.

Question 4

When is the best time of year to visit Rhine Falls for maximum water flow?

Accepted Answer

The highest water volume occurs in late spring and early summer (May-June), when Alpine snowmelt peaks. During this period, the falls operate at full force, creating dramatic spray and sound. Avoid September-February for reduced flow due to lower rainfall and hydroelectric management.
