Best Prague National Theatre Opera Tours & Trips

This historic masterpiece is an important Czech cultural landmark with a lavishly decorated interior that is absolutely stunning. The Prague National Theatre Opera was opened in 1881 for the arrival of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria for the Libuše with music by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. It was designed by architect Josef von Zitek and his student Josef Schulz later renovated the structure after an 1881 fire. The interior art was created by Mikolaš Aleš and František Ženišek. Today, it hosts performances of opera, ballet and drama.

FAQs about Prague National Theatre Opera Tours

Which London Underground station is closest to the National Theatre?

Waterloo Station is the nearest hub, located just a two-minute walk across the pedestrian bridge. The Jubilee, Bakerloo, Northern, and Waterloo & City lines all serve this station. Avoid taxis during peak hours as traffic on the South Bank can cause significant delays.

What is the best time of year to visit the National Theatre for outdoor performances?

Visit between June and August for the Open Air Theatre season on the river terrace. Weather is generally mild, but always bring a light waterproof layer as London rain showers occur frequently even in summer. Evening shows offer the best views of the illuminated city skyline.

Do I need to book National Theatre tickets in advance or can I buy them on the day?

Book online at least two weeks ahead for popular productions, as they often sell out. However, day seats are released daily at 1pm for £25 via the website or box office. Arrive early for these limited tickets, especially for weekend performances or during the holiday season.

Are there affordable dining options inside the National Theatre complex?

Yes, the Canteen on level two offers high-quality meals under £15, while the Ground Floor Cafe serves quick snacks and coffee. For a pre-theatre drink, the River Room provides riverside seating. Note that outside food is not permitted in the auditoriums during performances.
