Question 1

Which airport is closest to Plaza de Mayo and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Jorge Newbery Airfield (AEP) is the nearest airport, located just 6 km away. Take a taxi or Uber for a 15-minute ride depending on traffic. Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) is 35 km south; use the Manuel Tienda León shuttle bus or a pre-booked transfer to reach the square in about 45 minutes without navigating public transit with luggage.

Question 2

What are the safest times to visit Plaza de Mayo and which areas should I avoid?

Accepted Answer

Visit during daylight hours when police presence is high and crowds are active. Avoid the perimeter late at night, especially near the intersection with Avenida de Mayo where pickpocketing risks increase. Stick to well-lit streets when leaving. Do not engage with unauthorized street vendors or political demonstrators if tensions appear to be rising during scheduled protests.

Question 3

How does the rainy season affect travel plans around Plaza de Mayo?

Accepted Answer

Buenos Aires experiences heavy rain primarily from October to March. Sudden downpours can flood the square and halt subway services temporarily. Carry a compact umbrella and wear waterproof shoes. If a storm hits, seek shelter inside the Cabildo or the Metropolitan Cathedral. Check local weather alerts before visiting, as flash floods can disrupt nearby traffic for hours.

Question 4

Can I exchange money near Plaza de Mayo and what currency should I use?

Accepted Answer

The official currency is the Argentine Peso. Avoid exchanging large sums at airport kiosks due to poor rates. Authorized exchange houses (casas de cambio) are located on nearby Florida Street. While credit cards are widely accepted, carry cash for small vendors. Be aware of the fluctuating unofficial exchange rate and only use reputable dealers to ensure fair value and security.
