Which entrance to Pingyao Ancient City offers the shortest wait time and easiest access to major attractions?

Enter through the South Gate (Xiakoumen) for direct access to the main street and key sites like the City God Temple and Ming-Qing Street. It’s less congested than the East Gate and well-connected to shuttle buses from Pingyao South Railway Station. Arrive before 8:30 AM to avoid tour groups.

Accepted Answer

Most travelers need 1 to 2 days to explore Pingyao comfortably. The city is compact and well-preserved, making it easy to see the main highlights within a short time.

The most convenient way to travel from Beijing to Pingyao is by high-speed train, which takes about 4–5 hours and offers a comfortable and efficient journey. Trains typically depart from Beijing West Railway Station and arrive at Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station. For budget travelers, regular trains are available and take 8–12 hours, including overnight sleeper options. Alternatively, you can fly to Taiyuan and then transfer by train or car to Pingyao, though this option is less direct.
