Due to agriculture and logging, Manuel Antonio is one of only two major areas of tropical rainforest left along the entire Pacific coast of Central America. It is famous for its hiking trails, coral reef and beaches, which are lined with lush forest and offer excellent snorkeling. Rare squirrel monkeys, sloths, colorful crabs, toucans and iguanas and make their home in the park and contribute its startling biodiversity. Just be careful the monkeys don’t steal your lunch!

This 16-day adventure is no joke. We rafted class III rapids on the Pacuare River, zip-lined through Monteverde clouds, hiked to the base of Arenal, and kayaked in the Osa Peninsula. The guide, Esteban, was a former white-water guide. The only downside: the day 9 hike was very muddy and slippery – bring good boots.
