Question 1

Which airport is closest to Manla Reservoir and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

The nearest major airport is Lhasa Gonggar Airport, located about 200 kilometers away. From Lhasa, you must hire a private vehicle or join a guided tour to drive south through Gyantse to reach the reservoir. Public transport does not directly serve the dam site. Ensure you have a Tibet Travel Permit before booking any flights or ground transport to this restricted region.

Question 2

Do I need a special permit to visit Manla Reservoir in Tingri County?

Accepted Answer

Yes, foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit and an Alien Travel Permit to visit Tingri County where the reservoir is located. These documents are mandatory for hotel check-ins and police checkpoints along the highway. Independent travel is not permitted; you must book through a licensed agency that arranges your guide, driver, and all necessary documentation before your arrival in Tibet.

Question 3

How high is the altitude at Manla Reservoir and what precautions should I take?

Accepted Answer

The reservoir sits at approximately 4,600 meters above sea level, posing a significant risk of acute mountain sickness. Spend at least two days acclimatizing in Lhasa before ascending further. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity upon arrival, and carry medication like acetazolamide. Descend immediately if you experience severe headaches, nausea, or shortness of breath, as medical facilities near the dam are limited.
