Question 1

What are the opening hours and entry fees for Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan?

Accepted Answer

Man Mo Temple operates daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM with no admission fee. Visitors should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees, as it remains an active place of worship. Photography is permitted in the main hall, but flash usage and tripods are prohibited to respect devotees. The temple closes briefly during major religious ceremonies, so checking ahead is wise.

Question 2

How do I get to Man Mo Temple from Hong Kong International Airport?

Accepted Answer

Take the Airport Express train to Hong Kong Station, then transfer to the Island Line heading towards Chai Wan. Alight at Sheung Wan Station and use Exit A2. The temple is a five-minute walk up Hollywood Road. This route takes approximately 45 minutes and costs around 115 HKD. Taxis are available but often slower due to traffic congestion in Central district.

Question 3

What is the best time of year to visit Man Mo Temple to avoid crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit on weekday mornings between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM to avoid peak tourist groups. The temple is most crowded during the Lunar New Year and the Birthday of Man Cheong in late September. Avoid the humid summer months from June to August if you dislike heat, as the narrow streets retain warmth. Late autumn offers cooler temperatures and clearer skies for exploring Sheung Wan.

Question 4

Can I light incense inside Man Mo Temple, and where do I buy it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, lighting incense is a central ritual here. You can purchase bundles of incense and spiral coils directly from vendors on the small street adjacent to the temple entrance. Prices range from 20 to 50 HKD. Light your incense at the provided burners in the courtyard, not inside the main halls, to prevent smoke accumulation. Always bow three times before placing your offering in the urn.
