Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit the Longmen Grottoes to avoid heavy rain and crowds?

Accepted Answer

Visit during spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October) for mild weather and clear skies. Avoid July and August, as this is the peak rainy season in Luoyang, which can make the stone steps slippery and obscure views of the carvings. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends or national holidays.

Question 2

Which airport serves the Longmen Grottoes and how do travelers reach the site from there?

Accepted Answer

Luoyang Beijiao Airport is the closest hub, located about 12 kilometers from the grottoes. Travelers can take a taxi for roughly 20 minutes or use public bus line 81, which connects the airport area to the Longmen scenic zone. For those flying into Zhengzhou, a high-speed train to Luoyang Longmen Station takes just 40 minutes.

Question 3

Are there combined tickets or local passes available for visiting the Longmen Grottoes and nearby attractions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Luoyang Tourist Pass often includes entry to the Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple, and the Guanlin Temple for a discounted rate if purchased online in advance. This digital pass helps skip ticket lines. Note that separate fees usually apply for the electric shuttle carts inside the scenic area and the night view light show.

Question 4

What specific areas within the Longmen Grottoes should visitors prioritize seeing first?

Accepted Answer

Start at the West Hill to see the Fengxian Temple, home to the massive Vairocana Buddha carved under Empress Wu Zetian. This section holds the most significant statues. Afterward, cross the Yi River to the East Hill for quieter caves and panoramic views back toward the main cliffs. The Xiangshan Temple on the East Hill is also worth a brief stop.
