Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Katherine Gorge for swimming?

Accepted Answer

Visit between May and September during the dry season. Water levels are lower, revealing more gorges, and temperatures are mild. Swimming is safe and popular at Edith Falls and specific gorge sections. Avoid the wet season from November to March due to flash flood risks and park closures.

Question 2

How do I get from Darwin Airport to Katherine Gorge?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Darwin International Airport, then take a 3.5-hour drive south via the Stuart Highway. Rent a car for flexibility or book a direct coach transfer. Several tour operators offer day trips or multi-day packages including transport. No direct flights exist to Katherine itself.

Question 3

Are there multi-gorge passes available for Nitmiluk National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, purchase the Nitmiluk Explorer Pass at the visitor center. It grants access to multiple gorges, shuttle boats, and walking trails over several days. Single-entry tickets are also available but less cost-effective for extended exploration. Booking boat tours in advance is highly recommended during peak season.

Question 4

Can I swim in all sections of Katherine Gorge?

Accepted Answer

No, swimming is restricted to designated areas only due to saltwater crocodiles. Always check current signage and ranger advice before entering water. Safe swimming spots include Edith Falls and parts of the first gorge. Never swim near riverbanks or in murky water where visibility is low.
