Question 1

How do I get to the Great Ocean Walk from Melbourne?

Accepted Answer

The Great Ocean Walk starts near Apollo Bay, approximately 180 km southwest of Melbourne. Drive along the scenic Great Ocean Road (about 3 hours) or take a V/Line coach to Apollo Bay. Self-drive is the most flexible option, with parking available at the trailheads. Public transport options are limited, so plan transfers in advance.

Question 2

What’s the best time of year to hike the Great Ocean Walk?

Accepted Answer

The ideal time to hike the Great Ocean Walk is from November to April, during the dry season when temperatures range from 15–25°C. These months offer stable weather and safer trail conditions. Avoid winter (June–August), as heavy rain can make trails slippery and cause flooding in low-lying sections.

Question 3

Are there accommodation options along the Great Ocean Walk?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there are designated campgrounds at Blanket Bay, Johanna Beach, and Aire River, each equipped with toilets, shelters, and rainwater tanks. Bookings are essential and managed through Parks Victoria. For more comfort, stay in lodges or B&Bs in Apollo Bay, Princetown, or Wye River, which offer pick-up/drop-off services.

Question 4

Do I need a permit or pass to hike the Great Ocean Walk?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a permit is required for all hikers, even day walkers. Book online through Parks Victoria’s website. Fees support trail maintenance and conservation. Carrying your permit at all times is mandatory. Day passes and multi-day options are available, and bookings often fill months ahead, especially in peak season.
