This island utopia, also known as K’Gari by the native Butchulla, means Paradise. Fraser Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was created by thousands of years of sand drifting off the coast of Australia. Today it is the largest sand island in the world, and the only known place on the planet where tall rain forest are able to grow on sand dunes at elevations of over 200 meters. This massive sandbar, also consists of freshwater azure lakes, crystal-clear creeks and monolithic sand dunes, and is home to abundant wildlife, including dingo.

28-Day Australia East Coast Adventure Tour from Sydney: Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise, Brisbane, Fraser Island, Whitsundays, Cairns and Beach

I had the trip of a lifetime. I cannot explain how amazing this experience was - from Kgari to the Whitsundays, swimming with sting rays and spotting dolphins, it was an experience I will never forget. I am so sad the trip has ended. Our tour leader Keira absolutely made the trip for me - I could not have wished for a better leader. She was so positive, fun and always brought so much energy to the group. She was so well organised & always made us feel at ease even when the weather meant things didnt go to plan. Nothing felt like too much of an ask, she was there to help no matter what.

FAQs about Fraser Island Tours

What is the best time to visit Fraser Island to avoid rain and jellyfish?

Visit between May and October for dry weather and mild temperatures. This winter window avoids the summer wet season, which brings heavy storms and dangerous marine stingers to nearby waters. Book vehicle permits and ferry crossings months in advance, as access limits apply during this peak tourist period.

Where is the closest airport to Fraser Island and how do I cross over?

Hervey Bay Airport is the closest hub, located just thirty minutes from the River Heads ferry terminal. Alternatively, fly into Brisbane and drive three hours north. You must transport your vehicle via a barge from River Heads or Inskip Point. Passenger-only ferries also run from Hervey Bay if you plan to join guided tours instead of self-driving.

Can I swim safely in the lakes and oceans around Fraser Island?

Swim only in designated freshwater lakes like Lake McKenzie or Eli Creek, which are free from sharks and crocodiles. Avoid ocean swimming due to strong rips, unpredictable surf, and potential shark presence. Never enter waterways after heavy rain due to runoff. Always check daily safety alerts posted at trailheads for current hazard warnings before entering any water.
