Question 1

Which airport is closest to Mt Qomolangma Base Camp and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, then take a short domestic flight to Lukla Airport. From Lukla, begin the multi-day trek through the Khumbu Valley. Note that flights to Lukla are weather-dependent and often delayed during monsoon or winter seasons, so build buffer days into your itinerary.

Question 2

What is the best time of year to visit Mt Qomolangma Base Camp for clear views?

Accepted Answer

The optimal windows are pre-monsoon from late March to May and post-monsoon from late September to November. These periods offer stable weather, minimal cloud cover, and moderate temperatures. Avoid June through August due to heavy rain and obscured peaks, and December through February due to extreme cold and potential flight cancellations.

Question 3

Do I need a special permit to enter the Everest region and visit Base Camp?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all trekkers must obtain two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. Purchase the first in Kathmandu or at the park entrance in Monjo, and the second at the local government office in Lukla or Monjo. Carry physical copies as digital versions are not accepted at checkpoints.

Question 4

Can I use credit cards or ATMs along the trek to Mt Qomolangma Base Camp?

Accepted Answer

No, rely entirely on Nepali Rupees in cash for the entire trek. ATMs are unavailable beyond Lukla, and lodges, teahouses, and shops do not accept credit cards. Withdraw sufficient currency in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla, budgeting for meals, snacks, hot showers, charging devices, and emergency helicopter insurance contributions.
