Question 1

How can I visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg or Brussels as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Free guided tours of the European Parliament are available in Strasbourg and Brussels but must be booked in advance through your national parliamentary outreach office or the official EP website. Visitors undergo airport-style security screening. While Strasbourg hosts plenary sessions (best time to visit: late in the month), Brussels focuses on committee work. Same-day registration may be possible but isn’t guaranteed.

Question 2

What is the best time of year to see the European Parliament in session?

Accepted Answer

The best time to see the European Parliament in full plenary session is during its monthly four-day session in Strasbourg, typically held from mid-Monday to Thursday in the second half of each month, excluding August and sometimes July. For Brussels, committee meetings occur year-round, mostly from September to late spring, with peak activity September-December and February-May.

Question 3

Do I need ID to enter the European Parliament visitor center?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all visitors aged 14 and over must present a valid government-issued photo ID (passport or national identity card) to enter the European Parliament in Strasbourg or Brussels. This applies to both guided tours and public visit areas. Children under 14 need identification or a birth certificate. No bags larger than 35x40x20 cm are permitted.

Question 4

Are there any free public events or exhibitions at the European Parliament?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the European Parliament offers free public exhibitions, multimedia displays, and temporary thematic events at its visitor centers in Strasbourg (House of European History) and Brussels. These are accessible during opening hours without booking. Some events, like Europe Day (May 9), feature special access, talks, and activities. Check the official EP events calendar for current offerings.
