Question 1

Which airport is closest to Erhai Lake and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

Dali Huangcaoba Airport (DLU) is the nearest gateway, located just 30 kilometers from Erhai Lake. Travelers can take a direct airport shuttle bus to Dali Ancient City for approximately 30 CNY, then transfer to a local taxi or ride-share to reach specific lakeside towns like Shuanglang or Xizhou. The total journey typically takes under one hour depending on traffic.

Question 2

What is the best time of year to visit Erhai Lake to avoid heavy rain?

Accepted Answer

The ideal window is from November to April during the dry season, offering clear skies and mild temperatures perfect for cycling the lakeshore. Avoid July and August, which constitute the peak monsoon period with frequent heavy downpours that can obscure mountain views and make outdoor activities slippery. Spring also provides vibrant wildflowers along the eastern bank.

Question 3

Do I need a specific travel pass to cycle around the entire Erhai Lake?

Accepted Answer

No single unified pass exists for the full 130-kilometer loop, as the route crosses multiple jurisdictions. However, visitors must purchase separate entry tickets for specific scenic zones like the Lake Front Ecological Corridor or islands such as Little Putuo. Rent an e-bike in Dali Ancient City or Shuanglang, but note that some sections restrict motorized vehicles entirely.

Question 4

Is cash still widely accepted around Erhai Lake or should I use mobile payment?

Accepted Answer

Mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are dominant throughout the Erhai region, even in small village stalls and family-run guesthouses. While major hotels and restaurants accept international credit cards, carry some Chinese Yuan (CNY) cash for rural markets, bicycle rentals, or tipping boat operators where digital terminals may be unavailable or unreliable.
