Best Colosseum Tours & Trips

The ancient stone Roman arena is one of the most recognized structures in the world. Between A.D. 70-72 Flavian Emperor Vespasian announced to the Romans that he would built an amphitheater for them to watch gladiator matches at the then-location of Nero's Domus Aurea. Vespasian's son Titus opened the building called Vespasian Amphitheater in A.D. 80 and it held bloody battles between gladiators and animals among other entertainment for four centuries. When the Colosseum fell into disrepair, many used the site remains as construction materials until the 1700s. This extremely popular tourist attraction was also the site of many Roman Catholic ceremonies as well as many international capital punishment protests. The Roman Colosseum is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

7-Day Artistic Italy Loop Tour: Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Pisa, Venice & Cinque Terre

My friend and I joined this Artistic Italy tour and loved every day. Rome was an incredible start, especially seeing the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain. Tuscany was beautiful, and visiting Pienza and Siena felt like stepping into a postcard. Cinque Terre was the highlight of the trip with its colorful villages and stunning coastal views.

9-Day Europe Highlights Tour from Frankfurt: Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Lucerne, Milan, Venice, Rome

I chose this tour mainly to avoid the hassle of planning, and it worked out really well. The booking platform was simple to use, and all the details were clearly explained upfront. The route was thoughtfully arranged, combining big cities with scenic stops. The Rhine River views and time in Paris were highlights for me. Transportation was well handled, so I didn’t have to worry about logistics at all.The guide was approachable and informative. Customer service also checked in before the trip, which made me feel well prepared. Hotels were basic but comfortable enough for a short stay.

FAQs about Colosseum Tours

How do I skip the long lines at the Colosseum in Rome?

Purchase a timed-entry ticket online in advance through the official Parco Archeologico del Colosseo website. Combine it with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill for full access. Alternatively, book a guided tour, which includes priority entry and security checks, reducing wait times to under 10 minutes.

Is the Colosseum wheelchair accessible for visitors with mobility issues?

Yes, the Colosseum has wheelchair access via a temporary ramp at the main entrance. Elevators serve the main floor and the upper levels. Mobility aids are available free of charge. Pre-booking assistance through the official site is recommended to ensure smooth access and support staff availability.

What should I know about security checks before entering the Colosseum?

All visitors must pass airport-style security checks. Bags larger than 40x30x15 cm are prohibited. Avoid delays by arriving at least 30 minutes before your timed entry. Prohibited items include large backpacks, glass containers, and tripods. Lockers are available on-site for a fee.

Can I visit the Colosseum underground and arena areas, and how do I book access?

Yes, access to the underground chambers and arena floor is available through a special guided tour or a premium ticket. Book in advance via the official Colosseum website or an authorized tour operator, as these tickets sell out weeks ahead. Tours last approximately 1 hour.
