Best Coimbra Tours & Trips

This beautiful hillside city overlooking the Modego River is home to the oldest and most prestigious university in the Portuguese-speaking world. Coimbra served as the capital of Portugal during medieval times, and many buildings from that time period stand largely unchanged. During the academic year, the city bustles with throngs of university students enjoying the rich urban life on offer. On summer evenings, the famed Coimbra fado, a type of singing unique to Portugal, can be heard as you stroll down the bustling streets. This city, rich in history, culture, and youthful exuberance, is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Best Time to Visit Coimbra

Summer 2026/2027
Summer is the primary time for travel and outdoor recreation, defined by warm, consistently sunny, and dry conditions. The city, particularly the historic university area, can experience significant heat, often exceeding temperatures found on the immediate coast. Rainfall is minimal, ensuring highly reliable weather for exploring the extensive historical sites and gardens. The average daytime high temperature during this season is approximately 28°C (82°F), though heatwaves pushing temperatures well over 35°C (95°F) are not uncommon. After the students leave for break, the city is slightly quieter, though activities shift to the Mondego River, with kayaking and river beach relaxation becoming popular ways to cope with the heat.

Autumn 2026
Autumn is an ideal time to visit, characterized by a return to mild, comfortable temperatures and a visually appealing mix of sun and increasing cloud cover. The intense summer heat quickly dissipates, creating perfect conditions for unhurried exploration. This season, however, is also the start of the wettest period of the year, with October and November recording high levels of precipitation, often in the form of heavy bursts. The average daytime high temperature during this season is approximately 21°C (70°F), making it pleasant for walking the steep streets and enjoying the city’s many viewpoints. September sees the return of the university students, revitalizing the city with academic life, music, and the traditional fado singing.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Coimbra is mild compared to much of Europe, but it is distinctly cold, wet, and often cloudy, with high humidity making the temperatures feel chillier. This is the period of the lowest visitor volume and highest rainfall, often with several consecutive wet days, so waterproof attire is essential. Travelers benefit from lower accommodation rates and a quiet, authentic experience focused on cultural and indoor activities. Snow is extremely rare. The average daytime high temperature during this season is approximately 14°C (57°F), while nights can feel cold, with temperatures dropping close to the freezing point. It’s an excellent time for visiting museums, historical libraries, and enjoying the rich, warming cuisine of the region.

Spring 2027
Spring is a vibrant and extremely popular time to visit, seeing a rapid and appealing transition to warm, sunny, and highly comfortable weather. This period is marked by the blooming of the famous Botanical Garden and a significant increase in sunshine hours. The weather quickly becomes ideal for outdoor activities before the intense heat of mid-summer arrives. The average daytime high temperature during this season is approximately 19°C (66°F), though this steadily rises toward the end of the season. The first week of May is particularly popular due to the “Queima das Fitas,” which means Burning of the Ribbons, a spectacular academic festival that fills the city with music, parades, and youthful energy.

6-Day Northern Portugal from Lisbon: Fatima, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Batalha, Nazare, Obidos

Excellent tour from beginning to end. The itinerary had a good balance between sightseeing and travel time. I loved walking around Óbidos, it was like a fairy tale town. The guide gave us enough information but also allowed us time to enjoy the places ourselves. Hotels were clean and breakfast options were fine. Would definitely book another tour in Portugal.

11-Day Best of Portugal Tour from Lisbon: Algarve, Evora, Fatima , Porto and Coimbra | Local Experiences

The Best of Portugal Tour offered visitors the chance to experience a wonderful variety of historical and cultural sites around Portugal. Monasteries and churches, castles, palaces and fortresses, fishing villages and sun-soaked beach towns, wineries and restaurants... it was a great collection of places to see and explore. Trafalgar curated a wonderful list of sights, experiences and tastes. Accommodations were well selected at each location along the way... comfortable and in great, central locations that allowed tour members to explore these beautiful cities in free time. The itinerary was well-balanced...we saw so much of this lovely country. Travel days included regular stops in lovely towns, markets, monuments, historical sites en route to the main destinations. A balanced mix of 'drive & see' with opportunities to walk, taste and explore places along the way. Travellers in this group had a range of ages, physical abilities and fitness levels. Some days, touring through historical sites did involve more walking (steps/stairs at some sites and, at times, hilly walks through some villages and towns.) Some people might have found the walking at some locations/ events to be a challenge. Good footwear is also a MUST. Optional experiences allowed guests enrichment of additional locations and dining. These also served to allow guests to "pace to their needs and abilities". Opting out of a side trip might reduce walking (take a break/ rest) or allow those with dietary preferences to "choose their own adventure" in local restaurants. For some, opting out might also allow more explore time at some locations where there is so much to see but limited time. Have your phone charged and GPS ready for self-exploring (a back up battery is recommended!) Insight into the history, cultural relevance of sights, and day to day living of the Portuguese people was provided through our skilled guide, Emma Wilson. He was able to speak to the regions of Portugal, history, important industry, food, football and family lifestyles. Emma Wilson was also well versed in the botanical side of Portugal, which I truly enjoyed...cork trees (and industry), blossoming Lisbon jacaranda trees, the amazing fragrances of the citrus tea trees in Viseu and visit to the Mateus Estate gardens were lovely experiences. He is also an expert guide to the pastries of Portugal! His advice to not miss the optional visit to Monserraz should be taken seriously. So beautiful! Further, specialist guides provided wonderful perspectives into sights such as Batalha (spectacular!!!), Sintra and Evora. These guides have extensive knowledge of history, art, literature, architecture, and viewpoints of past ages ... walking these locations with a guide provides such a rich experience and perspective. This was my first experience travelling in a tour group. I loved the simplicity of booking the curated tour, then sitting back and enjoying the trip. As a solo traveller, the tour group also offered social opportunities and security. I made friends along the way and thoroughly enjoyed my fellow travellers from many countries and cultural backgrounds. I would definitely consider another tour with Trafalgar! I will quite certainly return to Portugal!

9-Day Pleasant Portugal Tour from Lisbon: Lagos, Algarve, Évora, Fátima, Porto, Obidos | Hotel Breakfast Included | Ticket Admission Included

This tour was the perfect balance of sightseeing and relaxation. The hotel stays were comfortable, and having breakfast included made mornings easy. I loved the visit to the Batalha Monastery—such stunning architecture! The evening transfer from Restauradores Square added a nice touch. Plus, sipping wine while cruising the Douro River was simply unforgettable. Can’t wait to share my experiences with friends!
