Question 1

Which airport is closest to the Cité de Carcassonne and how do I reach the castle from there?

Accepted Answer

Carcassonne Airport (CCF) sits just three kilometers from the medieval city, making it the most convenient entry point. Ryanair and other carriers serve this regional hub seasonally. Upon arrival, take the free shuttle bus or a short ten-minute taxi ride directly to the lower town. From there, follow signs to the Narbonnaise Gate for pedestrian access up to the castle ramparts.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Carcassonne to avoid summer crowds and extreme heat?

Accepted Answer

Visit during the shoulder seasons of April to May or September to October for mild weather and manageable tourist numbers. Summer months bring intense heat and dense crowds that hinder exploration of the narrow ramparts. Winter offers a stark, atmospheric experience with significantly fewer visitors, though some restaurants may close. Avoid mid-July if you dislike large festivals unless attending the specific events.

Question 3

Is there a specific tourist pass that includes entry to the Château Comtal and city walls?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the City Pass Carcassonne covers admission to the Château Comtal, the guided tour of the ramparts, and the Museum of Fine Arts. This single ticket provides better value than purchasing separate entries and allows priority access during peak hours. You can buy the pass at the main ticket office near the Narbonnaise Gate or online in advance to secure your preferred time slot for the castle visit.

Question 4

What currency should I use in Carcassonne and are credit cards widely accepted?

Accepted Answer

As part of France, Carcassonne uses the Euro (EUR) exclusively. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and the castle ticket office. However, carry some cash for small vendors in the lower town or for tips, as some smaller booths may not accept contactless payments under a certain amount. ATMs are readily available in the modern lower town near the train station.
