What are the tipping guidelines for this trip? Tipping for service is not practiced in Japan. Leaving money at restaurants, in taxis etc will simply cause confusion.

Tipping within the travel industry is standard to recognize the guide for a great experience. Our CEOs work hard to make your trip special. If you’re happy with their service, a tip of $5–$7 per day is a great way to say thanks, though the final amount is completely up to you.
errorAdditional fees
What should I consider when planning my personal expenses and discretionary spending for this itinerary? Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

errorMeals
What are the meals like on this trip? Eating is a big part of traveling. G Adventures knows that worldwide, local cuisines define the cultures. We think sampling regional delicacies are intrinsic to truly experiencing the country. We want you to be able to try foods according to your individual tastes, comforts, and budgets.

Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility. At times, meals will be taken together as a group. Other times, your CEO will point you in the direction of several delicious options, and you will have free time to pick and choose at will. Often in Japan it is fun to get some snacks and beverages with the salarymen in the evenings at small restaurants, and other times it is fun to sit with a few friends at a sushi train.

Your CEO will always strive to cater for all dietary requirements/preferences, but please keep in mind that Vegetarianism/Veganism is very uncommon in Japan so this may mean a more limited selection for you.

Please refer to the Meals Included and Budget Information for information regarding included meals on your trip. Japan's kitchen is at your fingertips!
errorSingle room supplement
Is there an extra cost for travelling solo? We believe single travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and single travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.
If I choose to purchase My Own Room, are there any exceptions during the trip? Please note that if you have booked the "My Own Room" option for this tour, you will receive your own single room for all night stops.

A fast-moving trip, but every day felt different. The temple stay on Mount Koya was unlike anything else we did in Japan. Hotels were well located, although rooms in Japan are definitely compact. A wonderful balance of culture, scenery and city energy.

I joined as a solo traveler and found it easy to settle into the group. Our photos barely capture how different the scenery felt from one stop to the next. Hakone provided a welcome scenic break from the larger cities. We prioritized cultural sites when comparing options which gave us room for spontaneous neighborhood meals. A little more time at one stop would have been welcome, though the overall pacing worked well. The route felt coherent and gave each stop a different role in the journey.

Tokyo's mix of busy neighborhoods and quieter shrines gave the route a strong opening. The smaller group made meeting points and questions easier to manage. We had limited vacation time, so the organized schedule helped us see much more than we could have managed independently. We prioritized cultural sites when comparing options which gave us room for spontaneous neighborhood meals. A little more time at one stop would have been welcome, though the overall pacing worked well. Overall, the experience was well balanced and memorable.

We wanted traditional Japan as well as the big cities, and this route delivered. Miyajima and Hiroshima were moving highlights, each in a very different way. Transport was smooth and the luggage-forwarding advice was very helpful. Pack light because there is a lot of rail travel and walking.

Japan had been on my list for years and this was a fantastic first visit. The Lake Ashi cruise and mountain scenery around Hakone were a welcome change of pace. Included meals were limited, but that gave us freedom to try small local restaurants. Expect plenty of steps, but the experiences are worth the effort.
