America's Historic Heritage

Day 1 - Washington DC Area. Welcome to Washington DC. Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.
Day 2 - Washington DC Area. Today begins with a guided sightseeing tour that shows you the graves of American heroes, including those of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, in beautiful Arlington National Cemetery. Afterward, your guided tour of the capital continues, with photo stops at Capitol Hill and the [FP] White House, and visits to the [FP] Lincoln, [FP] Korea, and [FP] Vietnam Memorials.
Day 3 - Washington DC Area - Mount Vernon - Yorktown - Williamsburg. A day filled with historic attractions. First is MOUNT VERNON, the beloved home of George and Martha Washington, overlooking the banks of the Potomac River. Then, on to Yorktown on the York River, and a visit to [FP] YORKTOWN HISTORICAL BATTLEFIELD PARK, where the British surrendered to Washington's troops, bringing an end to the American Revolution on October 19, 1781. Late-afternoon arrival in Williamsburg.
Day 4 - Williamsburg. Excursion to Jamestown Settlement & Colonial Williamsburg. A morning visit to nearby JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT for a guided tour to learn about the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The rest of the day is dedicated to COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG, where American heritage is proudly preserved in the reconstructed buildings and historical displays. Stroll down quaint streets and browse through homes, gardens, taverns, shops, and exhibits. In the Hall of Burgesses, listen as costumed interpreters debate the controversial steps that led to the Declaration of Independence. (CB)
Day 5 - Willimasburg - Richmond - Monticello - Shenandoah National Park. Drive westward to Richmond, once the capital of the Confederacy, for a short sightseeing tour. See Monument Avenue, the White House of the Confederacy, the State Capitol, and ST. JOHN'S CHURCH, where Patrick Henry proclaimed, "Give me liberty or give me death!" Before arriving in Charlottesville, we visit the graceful home of the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. The MONTICELLO ESTATE reflects Jefferson's skills as an artist, architect, and designer. A guided visit features the impressive mansion designed by Jefferson himself. It is the only house in the U.S. that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List of international treasures. Then, follow Skyline Drive into spectacular [FP] SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK for an overnight. (CB)
Day 6 - Shenandoah National Park - Harpers Ferry - Gettysbrug. Head for [FP] HARPERS FERRY NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK, where in 1859 John Brown made his ill-fated raid on the U.S. Arsenal. A visit to this quaint, historic community is like stepping into the past. Cross the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania, with a late-afternoon arrival in Gettysburg. Tonight we offer an optional outing to a local restaurant to enjoy the flavor of the area.
Day 7 - Gettysburg - Lancaster. The day begins with a visit to the hallowed [FP] GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK AND BATTLEFIELD, site of the decisive campaign of the Civil War and where Abraham Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address in November 1863. Enjoy a tour of Gettysburg and hear your Local Guide vividly recount the battle. Also spend some time exploring the newly renovated museum and cyclorama. Through Pennsylvania Dutch Country to Lancaster County, home of the religious Amish and Mennonite sects. Stop at the AMISH FARM & HOUSE, where a Local Guide explains the faith, culture, and way of life of these people, for whom tradition forbids the use of electricity or telephones in the home. Note the distinctive style of dress and the use of horse-drawn buggies in place of motor vehicles. This evening, join an optional dinner outing for a traditional Amish meal. (CB)
Day 8 - Lancaster - Valley Forge - Philadelphia. On to [FP] VALLEY FORGE, where Washington's troops endured such hardship during the bitter winter of 1777-1778. Tour the national historic park and camp, and see Washington's headquarters, the Grand Parade, and the Washington Memorial Chapel. Continue to Philadelphia, "Birthplace of the Nation." Arrive in Philadelphia in the early afternoon. Major attractions on your sightseeing tour include [FP] LIBERTY BELL and INDEPENDENCE HALL.
Day 9 - Philadelphia - Washington DC Area. This morning, we make our way to Washington Dulles International and Reagan National Airports for those with homebound flights. Please schedule flights after 2 pm. (CB)
