9:30am Kyoto
▼Nijo Castle (Approx. 1 hour, admission not included)
A symbol of Tokugawa shogunate power, Nijo Castle represents the political authority of Edo-period Japan. Built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the castle later became the stage of Japan’s most important historical shift — the return of political power to the Emperor, marking the beginning of the Meiji Restoration.
Ninomaru Palace
Step into the residence of shoguns! The creaking “Nightingale Floors” were cleverly designed to alert against assassins. Inside, admire the grand wall paintings by the Kano School, exuding samurai-era authority.
Japanese Garden Aesthetics
The castle’s pond-style garden combines refined landscaping, pine trees, and symbolic rock arrangements — a masterpiece of Edo aesthetics.
Historical Significance
Nijo Castle is a site of great historical importance — this is where the Tokugawa shogunate returned political power to the Emperor, marking the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Walking through the halls feels like stepping into one of Japan’s defining historical moments.
*Closed Days
The entire castle is closed from December 29 to 31.
Ninomaru Palace is closed every Tuesday in January, July, August, and December, as well as from December 26 to 28 and January 1 to 3.

*If a listed Tuesday falls on a public holiday, the palace will open that day and close on the following Wednesday instead.
▼ Alternative Attraction on Castle or Palace Closed Days:
▼ Heian Shrine (Approx. 1 hour, free time)
Heian Shrine was built in 1895 (Meiji 28) to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto’s establishment as the capital. It enshrines Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei from the Heian period. The shrine is renowned for its Heian Palace-style architecture, featuring a magnificent vermilion torii gate that stands as one of Kyoto’s iconic landmarks.
The gardens offer beautiful scenery in every season — cherry blossoms in spring and vivid autumn foliage make it one of Kyoto’s must-visit cultural and historical sites.
Visiting the shrine is free of charge, but entrance to the Shin’en Garden requires a separate ticket.

11:00am Kyoto
▼ Kinkakuji (Approx. 40 minutes, admission not included)
Kinkakuji, officially known as Rokuonji Temple, is famed for its central structure, the Golden Pavilion, whose exterior walls are completely covered in gold leaf—hence its popular name, “Kinkakuji.” The temple was originally built in 1397 as the villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (the model for the shogun character in Ikkyu-san), and later converted into a Zen temple for spiritual reflection. Visiting during the autumn foliage season offers a breathtaking sight — the golden pavilion set against a backdrop of fiery red maple leaves creates one of Kyoto’s most iconic views.

12:30pm Kyoto
▼ Arashiyama Kyoto’s Must-Visit Scenic Trio (Approx. 2 hours, free time)
Togetsukyo Bridge – A Century-Old Kyoto Landmark
The symbolic face of Arashiyama! Togetsukyo Bridge stretches gracefully over the Katsura River, offering picture-perfect scenery year-round — cherry blossoms in spring, lush greens in summer, fiery maples in autumn, and a serene snowscape in winter. Its name, meaning “Moon Crossing Bridge,” evokes a poetic image of the moon gliding across the sky.
Bamboo Grove Path – A Natural Sanctuary for the Soul
The famous Sagano Bamboo Forest lies in Arashiyama, with a walking path about 500 meters long leading from Nonomiya Shrine to Okochi Sanso Villa. As you walk through the bamboo grove, listen to the wind rustling through the stalks — this soothing sound has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Soundscapes Worth Preserving.
Kimono Forest – An Enchanting Light Installation of Japanese Elegance
At Randen Arashiyama Station, the “Kimono Forest” features 600 illuminated pillars wrapped in colorful Kyo-Yuzen kimono fabrics, creating a magical corridor of light. Here you’ll also find the Dragon’s Pond of Love, said to grant wishes made to the guardian dragon of Arashiyama. Immerse your hands in the sacred Atago Water, believed to purify the spirit and bring happiness.
Nonomiya Shrine – A Hidden Sanctuary of Love within the Bamboo Grove ✨
Nestled deep in the bamboo forest, Nonomiya Shrine is a small yet spiritually powerful shrine famous for blessings in love, academics, and safe childbirth. A quiet, mystical energy fills this space, making it one of Kyoto’s most beloved power spots for those seeking peace and good fortune.

15:30pm Kyoto
▼ Fushimi Inari Taisha – The Vermilion Tunnel of a Thousand Torii Gates (Approx. 70 minutes, free time)
Overview
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of over 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan. Founded in 711 AD, it is one of Japan’s oldest and most revered Shinto shrines. The main deity, Ukanomitama-no-Kami, is worshipped as the god of agriculture, prosperity, and household safety. The shrine is especially popular among business owners and merchants seeking blessings for success and good fortune.
Senbon Torii – The Thousand Torii Gates
The shrine’s most iconic feature is its endless rows of vivid vermilion torii gates, stretching for several kilometers along the sacred Mount Inari trail. Each gate is a donation from individuals or companies as an offering of gratitude or a prayer for blessings. The names of the donors and the dates of dedication are inscribed on the back of each gate, giving the site a deeply spiritual and historical atmosphere.
Travel Tip: The best photo spot is at the entrance of the Senbon Torii behind the main hall — early morning offers softer light and fewer crowds.
Fox Symbolism
Foxes (kitsune) are regarded as the messengers of the Inari deity, and throughout the shrine, you’ll see stone fox statues holding keys, rice stalks, or scrolls in their mouths. They symbolize wisdom and divine communication. Visitors can also purchase fox-shaped ema (wooden wishing plaques) and fox talisman charms, which are popular souvenirs and unique symbols of Fushimi Inari’s sacred culture.
