Founded in 788 by Monk Saichō, Enryaku-ji Temple stands majestically on Mt. Hiei overlooking Lake Biwa. Known as the birthplace of Japanese Buddhism, it remains an active training ground for monks of the Tendai sect.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the vast temple complex spans over 1,700 hectares and includes more than 100 historic structures divided among three main areas — Tōdō, Saitō, and Yokokawa.
The central Tōdō area features Konpon Chūdō, the temple’s main hall, where the Eternal Dharma Light has burned continuously for over 1,200 years.
A short 5-minute walk away, you’ll find Amida Hall, built in 1937, where you can experience the tranquil sounds of the Suikinkutsu (Water Harp Cave) — a uniquely Japanese meditative experience.

Hachiman-bori Canal connected the town to
Lake Biwa, serving as a key waterway for transporting goods to Osaka and Edo (Tokyo).Lined with white-walled warehouses, willow trees, and wooden bridges, the canal’s nostalgic scenery has made it a
popular filming location for Japanese period dramas such as
Rurouni Kenshin,
Mito Kōmon, and
Hissatsu Shigotonin. As you stroll along the peaceful waterfront, it feels like stepping back in time to the Edo period — where elegance and history intertwine.

Open only during the autumn season (November 15 – December 7), it is renowned for its nighttime maple illumination, when vibrant red leaves glow softly under lanterns, reflecting on moss-covered stones and temple ponds.
The temple’s moss garden, designed by the legendary landscape artist Kobori Enshū, embodies the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi. Its thatched-roof study hall, a designated cultural property, and the tranquil forest surroundings create a scene reminiscent of a hidden world untouched by time.
