10:30am Amanohashidate
▼ Amanohashidate Area Sightseeing(Approx. 2 hours, Free time; optional ropeway + sightseeing cruise package available or not included)
Amanohashidate, located on Miyazu Bay facing the Sea of Japan, is one of Japan's
Three Scenic Views alongside Matsushima and Miyajima. This natural sandbar stretches about 3.6 km, formed by coastal deposits, and is lined with nearly 8,000 pine trees. With white sandy beaches on both sides, it resembles a "bridge to heaven,"giving Amanohashidate its poetic name. From here, you can admire the harmony of mountains, sea, and islands in one panoramic view.
Amanohashidate View Land (*Requires taking the Amanohashidate Ropeway up the mountain)
Take the ropeway up to Monju Mountain for the most famous viewpoint. Known as the "View of the Flying Dragon,"the scenery looks like a dragon soaring into the sky when viewed upside down between your legs. The park features seven dedicated viewing spots, as well as the 250m-long, 8.5m-high circular
Sky Deck Corridor, offering a 360-degree panorama of Amanohashidate and Miyazu Bay. Families can also enjoy fun attractions such as mini-racing cars, merry-go-rounds, Ferris wheel, and sky bicycles, along with archery and retro shooting games. Don't miss the popular "
Lucky Clay Disk Throwing"activity — legend says if your disk passes through the "Wisdom Ring," your wish will come true.
* From December 16 to December 18, the Viewland Ropeway will be closed for maintenance. During this period, visitors will take the ropeway at Kasamatsu Park instead.
Chion-ji Temple
Located at the southern entrance of Amanohashidate, Chion-ji is dedicated to the deity of wisdom, Monju Bosatsu. With a history tracing back to the 9th century, the temple houses the oldest wooden structure in Miyazu — a pagoda built in 1501, now a designated Important Cultural Property. Visitors can also try the famous "
Wisdom Mochi"(sweet rice cake with red beans), said to increase intelligence, available at tea houses by the temple gate.
Chienowa Lantern
Next to Chion-ji Temple stands the Chienowa Lantern, a historic stone lantern dating back to the Edo period. Local tradition holds that walking through the "Wisdom Ring" three times brings good fortune and wisdom.
Rotating Bridge
A rare engineering sight — the
Amanohashidate Rotating Bridge slowly pivots 90 degrees like a clock hand to let boats pass before returning to its original position. Watching this elegant movement is a highlight of the area.
Japan's Scenic Views Monument
A short walk from the Rotating Bridge, the iconic
Amanohashidate Monument marks the entrance to one of Japan's Three Scenic Views. It's a popular spot to take commemorative photos.
Amanohashidate Beach (Summer only)
Both sides of the sandbar feature fine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Strolling under the shade of dense pine groves or enjoying a refreshing dip makes for a perfect seasonal highlight.
