▼ Atami Kinomiya Shrine (about 60 minutes, free activity)
Since ancient times, Kinomiya Shrine has been worshiped as a deity symbolizing "good fortune and happiness,"deeply revered by the residents of the Atami area. Within the shrine grounds stands a sacred camphor tree, designated as a National Natural Monument, and regarded as one of Japan's foremost spiritual energy spots.
【Kinomiya Shrine – Sacred Camphor Tree】
This camphor tree, which has lived for over 2,100 years, is still lush and vigorous today. Legend says that if you walk around the tree once, your life will be extended by one year; if you walk while making a silent wish, your wish may come true. For this reason, worshippers seeking health, longevity, and the fulfillment of wishes visit continuously.
Inside the shrine, many visitors also come to draw the sacred water, said to have the power to purify the body and mind. It is believed that drinking it not only helps health but also improves fortune. The offering fee for each time is 1,000 yen. In addition, Kinomiya Shrine is also famous as a guardian deity against alcohol troubles. Visitors can obtain the "Sake Misfortune Removal Amulet," which protects against misfortunes caused by drinking, as well as the "Great Camphor Insect-Repelling Amulet,"believed to ward off calamities and disasters.
Within the grounds there are several cafés, providing resting places during the visit. You may enjoy the shrine's specialty, Mugi Kogashi Manju (roasted wheat buns), while spending a quiet moment. These buns are not only traditional offerings to the deity but also make excellent souvenirs or gifts to take home.
▼ Atami Plum Garden – Beautiful scenery where Japan's earliest plum blossoms and autumn leaves mingle (about 60 minutes, free activity)
Atami Plum Garden was originally established in 1886 by Yokohama businessman Motegi Sobei.
Stretching about 44,000 square meters along the Hatsukawa River, the garden is planted with 469 plum trees of 60 varieties, including century-old trees. The first plum blossoms bloom from late November to early December each year, earning the garden the reputation of having "Japan's earliest plum blossoms."
In addition to plum blossoms, the garden also features cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery and fireflies in early summer, and autumn foliage, allowing visitors to enjoy Japan's seasonal beauty year-round. The autumn leaves are particularly famous for being "the latest in Japan to turn red." Every year from mid-November to early December, the "Atami Plum Garden Autumn Leaves Festival"is held.
